Keep your Energy Level High in the Workplace

Maintaining your energy is a fundamental cornerstone of any employee’s success and HRMatrix is here to provide you helpful tips in order for you to progress without compromising your energy. Energy is a precious resource and it derives from your mental and physical state. It is important to acknowledge both of these sources otherwise your energy levels will be noticeably impacted.

1. Audit your habits

It is suggested that you audit your daily activities to look for the things that sap your energy. Do you skip breakfast and rush to work? Perhaps, like many of us, you reach for sugar or caffeine to instantly boost energy only to feel the crash later? Writing a list of your energy drains could lead to a moment of clarity that creates momentum for changing them.

Making just a mere change can help you reap big rewards. For example, in a study, researchers found that workers who stepped away from their office to have lunch at the beach or in a park were much happier on their return than those who ate lunch at their desk or at an on-site cafe. In fact, those eating at work recorded a drop in happiness right after lunch. Taking your lunch outdoors not only gives your eyes a rest from the computer screen, but it can also give a happiness zap to your emotional energy, as well.

2. Schedule rest

Rest is usually undervalued, yet it’s what we need most to replenish our energy. A good night’s rest is key. Your body’s wellbeing is your goal. It is doing so many things for you just to keep you going. You should return the favor by offering it energy. The best way to do so is by sleeping! If you want to feel more energetic, give rest breaks a higher priority, and don’t feel guilty about it. Take routine breaks during your workday and plan that relaxing holiday.

3. Don't worry

One of the major sources of wasted mental, emotional and physical energy is through the stress associated with worrying over future things that have not occurred and ruminating over previous events that have already come and gone. Mindfulness is very important. You should understand that stress drains your energy and to circumvent this you must practice mindfulness. When we are overthinking all day, every day, it not only makes us feel stressed and anxious, but we are more tired at the end of the day. It also produces wear and tears on our system called allostatic load. The accretion of stress results in potential illness. Mindfulness meditation and cognitive behavior therapy are both effective ways to learn to worry and stress less.

5. Get mindful

Mindfulness training is one solution that big businesses such as Google are implementing to decrease employees’ stress and increase their performance and overall wellbeing. Mindfulness can be as simple as paying attention. Being aware, engaged and on task is an act of mindfulness. Even if you are planning for your future, you should do it when grounded in the present moment. If you are stressed, you are not really present. Much of what we call planning and preparation is actually worry pretending to be useful.  It’s not just a work thing, you can also be mindful when you’re at home. You can be giving your family, friends, or leisure activities your full attention.
